Scholarship Pathways

For Vietnamese students who want a bachelor's route with serious funding, the pathways are not all the same. Some are government full-degree scholarships filed from Vietnam. Some are university entrance awards that can renew. A much smaller set becomes relevant only after you have already started university. This page keeps those lanes separate so the plan stays honest.

Date note: this page was updated on March 26, 2026. Some 2026 cycles already closed before that date, but they still matter because these pathways reopen on annual cycles and should stay in the planning stack.
Official pages checked on March 26, 2026Focus: bachelor's and first-degree routesCore lanes: Hungary, Japan, Korea, Türkiye, Hong Kong, VietnamMain rule: do not plan around vague future scholarshipsAfter year 1 is real, but usually narrower than direct-entry full rides
Direct entry
Main engine

Hungary SH, MEXT, GKS-U, Türkiye Scholarships, and domestic full-ride options are the strongest first pass.

Entrance awards
Renewable

HKUST and CUHK can cover tuition and sometimes living support, but the biggest awards are mostly decided at admission.

After year 1
Narrow lane

The real cases are usually restart, exchange, or conversion routes, not a guaranteed free upgrade inside your current degree.

Three Real Lanes

The fastest way to make bad scholarship decisions is to blur these categories together. The first lane should carry the planning weight. The second can sit in parallel. The third should be treated as upside, not backbone.

Lane 1 Government full-degree scholarships

This is the cleanest full-funding logic before university starts. These routes usually define the whole degree structure and are applied for on national timelines.

  • Best examples here: Stipendium Hungaricum, MEXT, GKS-U, Türkiye Scholarships.
  • Strongest use case: grade-12 applicants, gap-year applicants, or students willing to restart cleanly.
Lane 2 University-entry full scholarships

These are institution-level awards. They can be very strong, but they behave more like admissions competitions than bilateral scholarship systems.

  • Best examples here: VinUniversity, HKUST, CUHK.
  • Many are automatic or nomination-based at admission, then renewed only if performance stays strong.
Lane 3 After-start and after-year-1 routes

These exist, but they are rarer and usually weaker than applicants assume. Some are real conversions; some are restart routes; some are funded exchange semesters, not new full degrees.

  • Treat these as second-chance or upside routes, not the primary funding plan.
  • If a school does not clearly publish late-stage funding, do not assume year-1 grades will magically turn into a full ride.

Pathways Worth Watching

These are the clearest scholarship-first or full-scholarship routes I found for Vietnamese students using official sources. The wording below keeps coverage, Vietnam timing, and the after-year-1 angle separate on purpose.

Government Hungary | Stipendium Hungaricum

One of the clearest Vietnam-to-Europe bachelor's funding routes. The 2026/27 call lists the Socialist Republic of Vietnam as an eligible sending partner for full-time study.

Vietnam timing Either, strongest before university

A Vietnamese student can apply before university, and the official call also contains limited after-start mechanisms. But the clearest same-level upgrade in the official rules is for self-financed students already studying in Hungary, not for students still studying in Vietnam.

  • Coverage: tuition-free study, HUF 43,700 per month, dormitory or HUF 40,000 per month accommodation contribution, and medical insurance.
  • Structure: the applicant files online with Tempus and also needs sending-partner nomination.
  • Timing: the 2026/27 online deadline in the official call was January 15, 2026.
After year 1

This is one of the rare official after-start upgrade paths. The same 2026/27 call lets some self-financed students already studying in Hungary apply at the same study level if they submit a host-university recommendation letter by March 15, 2026.

Planning warning

The official call explicitly says the package is only a contribution to living costs, not a guarantee that all living costs become zero.

Government Japan | MEXT Undergraduate

MEXT remains the strongest Japan-first full scholarship route at undergraduate level. The official 2026 embassy-recommendation guideline covers the preparatory year and the degree route after that.

Vietnam timing Either, but after year 1 means restart

The guideline explicitly handles applicants who are currently attending a university, so a student after year 1 in Vietnam can still use MEXT. The honest planning read is restart into a new Japan bachelor's route, not a transfer of the current degree.

  • Coverage: 117,000 yen monthly allowance, waived entrance and tuition fees, and MEXT-arranged airfare under the guideline.
  • Structure: embassy recommendation, written exams, interview, then MEXT screening.
  • Timing: the latest fully published Vietnam embassy cycle I found opened on April 17, 2025 and closed document submission on May 30, 2025 for 2026 entry.
After year 1

If you are already in university in Vietnam, this can still function as a restart lane if the age rules fit, but it should not be treated as a simple transfer scholarship from your current university.

Planning warning

The default undergraduate route is not a mid-degree funding upgrade inside your current programme; it is a new Japan entry route.

Government Korea | GKS Undergraduate

GKS-U is a real full-degree route for strong international applicants and stays one of the clearest Korea-first scholarship options open to Vietnamese students.

Vietnam timing Either, but after year 1 means restart

A student after year 1 in Vietnam can still use the undergraduate route if the age and education rules still fit, but it should be planned as a new Korea entry route. The separate exchange programme is only one semester.

  • Coverage: airfare, Korean-language training, tuition, and study allowances.
  • Structure: embassy track or university track, both run through the official GKS system.
  • Timing: the official Study in Korea page says the undergraduate cycle is announced in September, with applications typically running from September to October.
After year 1

Do not read GKS-U as a Korean-university first-year upgrade. For students already enrolled overseas, the separate GKS Exchange Students Program is real, but it is only one semester and depends on an inter-university agreement plus at least 80% academic performance.

Planning warning

This is strong as a direct-entry or restart route, but much weaker as a rescue plan after you have already started somewhere else.

Government Türkiye | Türkiye Scholarships

Türkiye Scholarships is still one of the most comprehensive fully funded bachelor's routes open across countries, including Vietnam.

Vietnam timing Either, but after year 1 means restart

A student after year 1 in Vietnam can still file if still under the undergraduate age limit. The official ineligibility is about students already enrolled in Turkish universities at that level, so this is not a same-degree rescue inside Türkiye.

  • Coverage: university placement, tuition, monthly stipend, one-year Turkish language course, accommodation, health insurance, and flight ticket.
  • Structure: the scholarship and university placement are bundled in one application system.
  • Timing: the official site says bachelor's applications run every year from January 10 to February 20; for 2026 that window closed on February 20, 2026.
After year 1

This is not a same-level rescue path. Türkiye Scholarships says applicants already enrolled in Turkish universities at the level they want to apply for are ineligible.

Planning warning

Many programmes are in Turkish, and even scholarship winners without the required Turkish proficiency may need the language-preparatory year.

Domestic Vietnam | VinUniversity

If the goal is real funding without leaving Vietnam immediately, VinUniversity still belongs in the top tier of practical options.

Vietnam timing Either, but scholarship is entry-first

VinUni says all applicants can apply for scholarships and it has a transfer-admissions track, so the route still exists after year 1 in Vietnam. But the public scholarship logic is still an entry scholarship granted on admission, not a later upgrade.

  • The current 2026-2027 scholarship page says the President's Excellence Scholarship covers 100% of tuition and living expenses, while the Provost's Merit Scholarship covers 100% of tuition.
  • The same current materials say merit awards already include the 35% Vingroup subsidy and admitted students can also seek need-based aid up to 100% of tuition.
  • This works well as a domestic full-aid lane running in parallel with overseas government scholarships.
After year 1

This is mainly an entry route. The public scholarship logic is strongest at admission, not as a published promise of a fresh full ride after year 1.

Planning warning

It is one of the strongest domestic safety valves, but it is still an admissions-driven merit and aid competition.

University Hong Kong | HKUST

HKUST is one of the clearest university-entry scholarship routes in Asia for top non-local applicants.

Vietnam timing Either, but strongest before university

HKUST accepts post-secondary and transfer applicants, and admissions scholarships are still considered automatically. But some headline awards, including the Future Leaders Award, are restricted to students admitted directly from high school.

  • HKUST's published scholarship pages show automatic academic scholarship assessment at admission.
  • The current public tables show cases up to full tuition plus an annual HKD60,000 allowance for top IB and other-qualification profiles, while Global Learners can deliver a full tuition waiver renewable for the normal duration subject to satisfactory performance.
  • This makes HKUST a serious scholarship-first route rather than a pay-first route for the strongest profiles.
After year 1

Most major HKUST awards are decided at admission and then renewed with satisfactory academic performance. Treat that as an entrance-scholarship lane, not as a fresh full-ride competition after year 1.

Planning warning

Some awards have narrow eligibility. For example, the Future Leaders Award page says applicants must be admitted directly from high school, so post-secondary applicants cannot assume every HKUST award remains open.

University Hong Kong | CUHK

CUHK is another real Hong Kong lane where tuition can be fully covered and some admission scholarships add annual allowances.

Vietnam timing Either, but after year 1 usually means Year-1 re-entry

CUHK says current bachelor's students are welcome to apply, but international admits are generally treated as Year 1 students. So after year 1 in Vietnam, this is still usable, but mostly as re-entry rather than clean transfer.

  • CUHK's admission-scholarships page says awards range from HKD5,000 to full tuition and that some scholarships also include allowances up to HKD66,000 per year.
  • The international FAQ says current bachelor's students are welcome to apply, but international admits are generally admitted as Year 1 students regardless of prior academic attainment.
  • That makes CUHK a plausible restart lane after year 1 in Vietnam, but not a clean transfer-funding route.
After year 1

CUHK does have some after-start awards such as the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarships for Excellence, which are competed for after the academic year has commenced, but those are not the main full-funding backbone.

Planning warning

For planning, the honest assumption is entry scholarship first, later awards second.

What “After First Year” Actually Means

This is the part applicants often get wrong. The phrase sounds like a simple upgrade path, but official rules usually mean one of four different things.

Conversion inside the same country

Hungary is the strongest real example here. A self-financed student already in Hungary can, in some cases, compete into Stipendium Hungaricum at the same level with host-university support.

Restart rather than transfer

MEXT and CUHK are both relevant if you have already started university elsewhere, but the clean reading is still restart-at-year-1 logic rather than guaranteed transfer credit.

Funded exchange, not new degree funding

Korea's GKS Exchange Students Program is real and useful for currently enrolled university students, but it funds one semester, not a whole new bachelor's degree.

Renewable is not the same as newly awarded

HKUST and CUHK both publish renewable admission scholarships. That is very different from saying average first-year students can later compete into a brand-new full ride.

Partial current-student awards are common

Current-student scholarships, success awards, and donor awards often exist after enrollment, but they are frequently stipend-only or tuition-only and should not be mistaken for full-degree rescue plans.

Practical Playbook

For a Vietnamese student who wants real odds at full funding, the best design is to run multiple lanes on purpose rather than waiting for one miracle scholarship.

1 Run lane 1 and lane 2 together

Apply to government full-degree scholarships and top university-entry scholarships in the same cycle.

2 Keep a documents stack ready early

Passport, transcripts, award scans, English proof, recommendation logic, and a clean activities list should be ready before application windows open.

3 Use year 1 as springboard, not fantasy

If you start locally or self-funded, treat year 1 as a platform to reapply, restart, or earn exchange opportunities, not as a guaranteed automatic full ride.

4 Watch annual timing with exact dates

Hungary and Türkiye already closed for the most recent published 2026 cycles; Japan and Korea should be watched again at the next embassy or national release.

5 Keep one domestic safety valve

VinUniversity remains one of the few domestic routes that can still behave like a true full-ride or near-full-aid fallback.
